Motto: Life is short, work somewhere awesome.
In this blog post I introduce briefly some ideas from #truHelsinki Ice Breaker Conference which was held 8.4. 2013. Kevin Wheeler talked about future of work and Graig Fisher about employer branding. I hope I’m able to share some of their ideas to you. This post is also a memo for myself.
Values will be different from gen-X. Status and pay check are replaced by:
Sustainability, Just enough, simplicity, openness, fun.
(But this change has already happened: I’m gen-X and those above are quite my values)
Only core employees work within the organization. New forms of partnership and co-work will arise. Organizations get virtual and project-based.
In this new, lean world recruiting changes. You don’t hire for life – maybe not even for a year. Psychological evaluations are less important because you hire co-workers/project workers. Your employees are also your customers.
Social networks will be more important. Along the person, you’ll get his/her network. For a while. Persons are brands who borrow their value to the organisation they work for.
Candidates and customers (almost the same thing) become the centre, not the employer. Candidate can choose how to contact recruiter, whether to have some online test or face-to-face interview. Recruiter is the flexible one.
Don’t act randomly, focus on analytics and analysis.
Graig Fisher introsduced us the term Profersonal. It’s a mix of professional and personal. Two things that can’t be totally separated anyway. And people are not interested in organisations but persons. So it is wise to share something personal -with certain rules.
Actually I have one same rule as Fisher: I share photos of my children, but I rarely (if ever) mention their names. And if I share photos from our summer house, they never show where it locates or how it looks. It’s private.
Personal is interesting, and people want to work with people they like and who share same values. 97% of social media is person-to-person as opposed to person-to-brand.
So as a brand ambassador it is important what you share and how you communicate. And as a personal brand, you borrow your value to the company you work for at the moment.
The future of employer branding is giving empowering your employees to share content. I totally agree with this. But sharing must be made easy. Here are some examples from Yle:
